More than three million visitors come here each year. Some choose to hike or bike, others to ski or camp. There is no shortage of activities in this place, which is recognized as one of the most beautiful mountain settings in the world. Banff is one of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks collectively designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Watch the sunset on a riverside walk or feel the breath of the glaciers in the alpine zone. The park has over 1,600 km of maintained trails. From the town of Banff and the village of Lake Louise, you can access the most popular hikes. The peak hiking season is from July to mid-September. Until the end of June, many passes are still covered with snow and can be prone to avalanches. Trails tend to be muddier during this period, so lower elevations or dry south-facing slopes around the town of Banff are more suitable for hiking. By mid-July, most alpine passes are cleared of snow. Don't forget to visit the Cave and Basin National Park to discover the birthplace of Canada's national parks and learn about the natural and cultural history of the mountains. Experience the warm water that seeps from the rock, smell the minerals and explore the trails. Enjoy the site at your own pace or take one of the many guided tours available to visitors.
